All participants will be personally welcomed at Athens Airport and escorted to their apartments in the ancient city of Lavrio. The two guest apartments are new and each consist of three double rooms with kitchen and bathroom. Breakfast is included in the form of a well-stocked refrigerator. Any additional special culinary requirements must be made by the participants themselves in one of the nearby supermarkets.
Ancient monuments or modern culture – the port city of Lavrio offers a bit of everything. With its early history of mining on the Attica coast, it is known for its ore mining. In ancient times, the wealthy people helped defend Greece. Through generous donations in the form of 200 modern warships, the oppression by the Persians could be ended. The victory gave birth to democracy in Greece. In ancient times, up to 30,000 people worked in the mines in the Lavriotiki region. The oldest Greek amphitheater known for its oval shape, Thoriko, dates from this period.
Zeus und Apollo stands for German management, easy access to history and culture and relaxed owner-guided tours. At the first dinner together in a typical Greek tavern, we will inform you about the course of our joint active week. We are happy to answer all of your open questions. As your tour guide, I am always available and for your safety we ensure you will be accompanied throughout with the Zeus & Apollo tour bus.
After breakfast, we will collect the Cube branded bicycles.
The essence of mountain biking, distilled into its purest for – that’s the beauty of the Cube Aim Hardtail MTB. Whether you are a new rider or a seasoned racer, our Cubes will match your requirements. There is also a limited quantity of Cube e-bikes (for an additional charge of 20 Euro per day) available for you.
We will set out to Thoriko, the oldest amphitheater in Greece, which dates back to 600 BC. We then continue to the mining town of Agios Konstantinos, with its beautiful Orthodox church, where the apostle Paul stayed on one of his trips to Athens. Let yourself be impressed by the great views on this route. After a short downhill section through the hilly landscape, we reach Saronida on the Attic coastal road.
We continue along the most beautiful coastal road in Greece – on the right we always have a direct view of the outstanding, azure blue sea. Our next destination is the Poseidon Temple at Cape Sunion.
There we pay homage to the god of the sea. It is possible to visit this attraction at your own expense or to stop for a swim in a beautiful bay nearby.
Your swimsuits are ready in our support vehicle. Then we drive back to our domicile in Lavrio. In the evening we oracle about the experience with ambrosia, wine and divine food. By the way, wine is a gift from the gods, it was given to people as a mercy.
We enjoy breakfast on the ferry, which we take from Lavrio at 8:15 am. If you want, you can take a small care package from your own refrigerator. Coffee or tea is available at the on-board bar. During the crossing through the Eastern Cyclades, we pass the island of Makronissos. In ancient times, the beautiful Helena, wife of the King of Troy, was stolen from Paris on this island and hidden there. This was the trigger for the Trojan War.
After about 1 hour we arrive in Kea at the port of Korissia. The island of Kea, which has been completely spared from mass tourism, is a natural paradise with many facets. For example, the largest oak forests in Europe grow there. In the past, leather was tanned here with the broth of these acorns without the use of any chemicals. At the start of our Kea Tour we will visit this factory on the Red Tractor Farm, where this old custom was brought back to life. Depending on the weather, we will take a yoga class in one of the wonderful places during our discovery tour.
We continue with our bicycles in search of the Nymphs of the island of Kea to Gialiskari, to Vourkari Beach with its noble yachts and to Otzias Bay, with the possibility to linger or swim.
Then it’s steep uphill towards Kastriani. We have the opportunity to visit the light blue whitewashed Kastriani monastery with a short 2km downhill detour. In the midst of wild cypresses, the monastery with its deep blue dome and white outer walls sits enthroned on a cliff high above the sea. It’s a fabulous location with great views over to the islands of Andros and Evia, as well as the notorious Devil’s Island Jaros.
We pedal uphill to the island’s capital Ioulida, where we’ll enjoy a well deserved lunch after this challenging uphill climb. There is still time to discover the traditional, old and car-free streets in the Chora. We also have the opportunity to stock up on souvenirs and memories. Strengthened, we go back in search of the missing Nymphs. In ancient times, a lion was sent by the gods to drive the nymphs off the island. Please have your cameras ready. If you capture a photo of these shy women, you will continue the tour with a golden laurel wreath!
After taking our ferry back from Kea to Lavrio, we’ll make a short stop in our apartments. At Götterdämmerung we start with the tour bus to Arcadia in the Peloponnese. We will spend the night in the beautiful mountain village of Vytina. The happiest people in Greece live there! Once at the hotel, we discuss the tour details for the next two days over dinner.
After breakfast we start at 9:30 am from Vytina to Dimitsana. Both villages are hidden well in the mountain Mainalo and you will be amazed by their architecture and traditional goods. The villages played an important role during the Greek Independence War of 1821. In Dimitsana our visit includes the monasteries of Loussios Gorge, Philosophou Monastery and the “Secret School”, the 1000 years old monastery that looks more like a fort! Between Dimitsana and Stemnitsa we also stop for a walk to the Prodromou monastery, which is well worth seeing. We walk downhill in a wildly romantic way – deeper and deeper into the gorge – and suddenly we stand below the monastery, which sticks to the rock wall like a swallow’s nest. Please pay attention to appropriate clothing when visiting the monastery (long trousers, shoulders covered). We continue with our bikes, along the beautiful mountains, to a typical mountain village of the region. In Karitena, we fortify ourselves with coffee, smoothies and ice cream, as a 20 km climb awaits us from here. Hesiod once said: “The gods sweat before success”. This should also be the case with us.
By a wink from the gods, we learned of the last known whereabouts of the goddess Artemis. A forest picnic awaits us there before we start looking. Anyone who can take a selfie with her will receive a tunic from us as an appropriate evening wear for dinner. Our tour bus takes us back to Vytina. We spend the evening eating together in the center of the village. Later we can visit the best cocktail bar in Greece which is right next to our restaurant. Thank the gods – our hotel is just a few minutes’ walk away !
After breakfast we start our tour of the gods at 9:00 am from Vytina to ancient Olympia. We follow the old route, which, in ancient times, connected western and eastern Peleponnese. This is our longest day tour, but we can enjoy our ride with a wonderful view and a mostly downhill road. The different vegetation zones accompany us with different aromas. Gradually the road gets wider, some tunnels follow, it gets more touristy and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world is not far. We reach the goal of the day.
There is the possibility to visit the ancient Olympia site, the birthplace of the Olympic Games where you will see the ancient stadium, the temple of Zeus , the Palestra and the unique museum, one of the best in Greece. In the epochal sanctuary of Zeus the father of gods and men was venerated. May the gods be with us! After a 3 hour stop we start back to Lavrio with our tour bus. As a stopover, we dine at dusk directly on the banks of the Corinth Canal.
After breakfast we start at 9:30 am for relaxed beach yoga.
After our yoga session, we take the tour bus to Athens.
You have the opportunity to visit the Acropolis individually, where the goddess Athena resided as an oversized gold statue. It was the state treasure of Athens. Alternatively, you can visit the very interesting, new, air-conditioned, Acropolis Museum. You can conquer the city alone or with us. Three hours later we take over the bikes and start in the direction of the Attic Riviera from the agreed meeting point in front of the Acropolis Museum. We ride south through Athens on cycle paths and safe roads, stopping at the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center, which opened in 2016. It is a culture, study and recreation center on the Bay of Faliro, a gift from the Greek shipowner and art collector to the Greek state. The center is also home to the Greek National Library and the Greek National Opera.
We continue along the coastal road, past the popular beach clubs, with impressive views of the surrounding islands, to our destination at Lake Vouliagmeni, one of the last stops on our Gods tour. This small freshwater lake is fed by subterranean currents that seep through the Ymittos mountain range. The lake is just a few meters from the seashore at the foot of a rocky hill. It is constantly being supplemented by both the sea and the underground thermal springs. A well-deserved bath of the gods in this lake with its therapeutic properties and mineral ingredients such as potassium, sodium, lithium, ammonium, calcium, iron, chlorine and iodine, combined with high salt concentrations and the high temperatures, ends our days together. Our tour bus takes us one last time along the sea road back to Lavrio, where we meet for a last dinner and review of the great days together.
A pleasant journey home to all of you. If you liked it, spread the word. If not, tell us.
We look forward to a reunion. Maybe next time you come with your family, friends, with your company or simply because you liked it so much. We are also happy to organize individual tours. We wish you all the very best, good health and always a hand’s breadth of asphalt under your wheels.
